The Sevier County Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SC SpEd PAC) held its sixth meeting on September 23, 2003. Six members attended. Since our meetings will be at various times and on various days this year, we should get a slightly different group at each meeting. Jeff Romanczuk will make calls and send e-mails as needed, and also distribute minutes to keep everyone informed of SpEd PAC items of concern. Jeff Romanczuk handed out the training needs survey, to help the Special Education Department plan parent and staff training for the next two school years. Please return the forms to Jeff by November 26. Jeff distributed a 4-page description of who does what in supporting special education county wide. Jeff asked again about members becoming points of contact for activities or areas of interest to them. Some ideas are parent/staff communication, a transportation point of contact (among the parents), someone who keeps up with transition issues, etc. Also, for those of you who are members of your child's school's PTO or School Improvement Planning Committee, giving the SpEd PAC regular updates of these activities could be useful. Kathy Dufau offered to attend school board meetings regularly and report to the SpEd PAC on board actions impacting special education. The Sevier County School Board meets the second Monday of each month at 4:30 pm. The next two Parent Support Group potluck lunch meetings are October 2 and November 6, noon to 1 pm at the Trula Lawson Center. Assistive Technology is the topic of the October meeting. For the Tuesdays remaining in October, the Sevier County Special Olympics Golf Team will meet at various courses around the county. See the PDF file link for places and contact information. On Thursday, October 16, from 3:45 to 5:45 pm, our school psychologists will discuss changes to the assessment process. This meeting is at the Trula Lawson Center and open to parents and school system staff. During the Tuesday, November 11 inservice day, a 2-hour Discrete Trials Training (DTT) will be available to SpEd staff and parents. DTT is similar to Applied Behavior Analysis and is intended for low-functioning, nonverbal students. To sign up e-mail Sandy Enloe, or call her at 453-1036. Kathy Dufau and Jane Boling will present the parents' perspective at the March 25, 2004 after school inservice session. Jeff Romanczuk will present on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program Alternative at the January 12, 2004 after-school inservice session (3:45 to 5:45 pm). More info later. The next SpEd PAC meeting will be on Monday, November 10, 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the Trula Lawson Center. If you have a child in Sevier County Special Education and would like to get involved in the SpEd PAC, please come. |
