ࡱ>  Root Entry,@MatOST!},!},MMMN0NDP0"=/KlTGROUNDS FOR SUSPENSION Suspension is defined as the temporary removal of a student from the regular school program for a period not to exceed ten school days. A student may be suspended from school by the principal, or designee, for a period not to exceed ten school days. Prior to suspending a student, the principal shall give consideration to the use of alternative measures unless the offense represents a "serious breach of conduct" as defined in School Board rules. (1) Reasons for suspension include, but are not limited to, the following: (a) disrespect for others (b) sexual harassment (c) classroom disruptions (d) assault (serious breach of conduct) (e) battery (serious breach of conduct) (f) illegal use, sale or possession of a controlled substance (g) smoking (h) intimidation (i) stealing (serious breach of conduct) (j) fighting (serious breach of conduct) (k) destruction of property (l) misconduct on the school bus (m) insubordination to teacher, teacher aide, bus driver, or other member of the school staff (serious breach of conduct) (n) possession of weapons (serious breach of conduct) (o) failure to report to detention (p) profane or obscene language (q) other serious misconduct or repeated misconduct of a less serious nature (r) possession of or use of alcoholic beverages on school property or at a school activity (serious breach of conduct) (s) possession of or use of electronic telephone pagers (2) A student who physically or verbally assaults any member of the instructional staff or any other employee of the School Board shall be guilty of a serious breach of conduct and may be suspended immediately for up to ten school days with further action by the School Board if warranted by the seriousness of the offense. (3) Any student formally charged with a felony (see sec. 7.305). (4) Subject to the district's responsibility under the Exceptional Children's Education Act and applicable federal statutes, the following shall be grounds for suspension or expulsion. a. Continued willful disobedience or open and persistent defiance of proper authority, including, but not limited to, repeated violations of district policy, and repeated instances of misconduct, no single occurrence of which might otherwise constitute a ground for suspension or expulsion. b. Willful destruction or defacing of school property. c. Repeated interference with the school's ability to provide educational opportunities to other students. d. Assault upon, disorderly conduct toward, harassment of, making knowingly false allegations of child abuse against, any criminal offense against a teacher or school employee, or damage to property of a teacher or employee which occurs on school premises. A minimum of three (3) days' suspension is mandatory. e. Behavior on or off school property which is detrimental to the welfare or safety of the student, other students, or of school personnel.
